BIRDING

Belvidere Estate offers a rich and diverse avian landscape across its well-established gardens, tranquil lagoon shores, and dedicated bird hide. Enthusiastic birders are almost certain to spot the striking Knysna turaco, while the more elusive chorister robin and Knysna warbler reward those with a keen eye.

Sunbirds take advantage of the estate’s vibrant gardens, while the haunting calls of the African fish eagle and the fiery-necked nightjar echo across the landscape. The salt marshes provide a sanctuary for the endangered African black oystercatcher, along with cormorants, grey herons, African spoonbills, and many other waterbirds.

From September to October, the Knysna Estuary becomes a seasonal haven for migratory waders, including whimbrels, sandpipers, and plovers, who journey from the northern hemisphere to enjoy the estate’s rich feeding grounds.
